5 Tips For Successful
PR Planning
Tip #1: Hire A Good Copywriter
If you are not a good writer, STOP! Hire a good copywriter to write
that press release for you. Editors, News Anchors, Publishers do
not the have time to decipher what you are attempting to tell them. A
good copywriter will help you illustrate a news-worthy story to perk
up the attention of any media specialist.
Tip #2: Check Your List Once And Check It Again
So you’ve developed a media list to submit your press releases to.
Who is on your media list? Is it updated and accurate? Positions
change and people come and go in the media business. Be sure
you update your contact list every six months to a year. Nothing is
more disappointing than submitting your press release only to find
out that it was sent to the abyss and was never looked at because
your contact has left or changed positions.
Tip #3: Know Your Media Target
Many times a media list will have an assortment of publishers
whose audiences’ interests vary. With this in mind, only submit your
press release to those on your list whose audience would benefit
from your message. Editors appreciate when you’ve taken the time
to get to know the types of subjects they write about and send them
a release that fall within their scope of subjects.
Tip #4: Be Professional
This goes along with tip #1. We have seen many business owners
throw together a few sentences detailing a grand opening, ribbon
cutting, or product release in a note and submit it to an editor in
hopes to get published. If you don’t take the time to research how to
write a press release, then consider hiring a professional publicist.
Your press release must be organized, professional, and convey
why your message is important to the reader.
Tip #5: Be Available, And Respond Right Away
Imagine, you’ve submitted a killer press release that generates
attention among the media. Now they’re calling you to answer a few
questions or even better, you’re wanted to for a few interviews. Don’t
put the inquiries from the media off! If you have emails or voicemails
from the media, get back to them right away. Often they are on very
tight deadlines and you don’t want to miss your opportunity in the
spotlight.
